Bhoomiheen Sewa Samiti is a registered charitable society with its Headquarters at Allahabad. It has been working for over 35 years in a village called Aau in Atarra tehsil, Banda district, Uttar Pradesh. Banda is counted among the most backward districts in the country. The main occupation of the people there is agriculture. A small number of landlords (chiefly Brahmins) own vast tracts of agricultural land upon which toil the great majority of villagers (mainly landless Dalits). The terms and conditions of their work are determined by a long-standing tradition: they work either as bataidar (share-cropper) or as harwaha (bonded labour). Nearly 65% of the population lives near or below the poverty line.
This structured inequality, often called semi-feudalism, has lost its legitimacy for it no longer serves any social purpose. From a historical perspective, therefore, the existing socio-economic structure is unstable and cannot last. It must give way to a democratic structure which will answer to the aspirations of the common people.
